Matisse: Painter as Sculptor
January 21–April 29, 2007

In our first collaborative exhibition, the Nasher Sculpture Center and The Dallas Museum of Art will present concurrently Matisse: Painter as Sculptor.  Co-organized also with the Baltimore Museum of Art, Matisse: Painter as Sculptor will be the first major exhibition of Matisse’s sculpture organized in the United States in nearly two decades.  To establish the artist’s role as a modern sculptor, the exhibition will place approximately 40 of his most important bronzes and plasters in carefully constructed thematic groups that will also include related paintings, drawings, and cut-outs.  The inclusion of comparative works by artists such as Paul Cézanne, Constantin Brancusi, Auguste Rodin, and Pablo Picasso will illuminate the context of Matisse’s work, his dialogue with the figurative tradition, the radical nature of his sculpture in the history of modern art, and his interaction with other great modernist masters.  Using new three-dimensional imaging technology, special interactive video programs will explore details of the artist’s creative process.  The installation at the Nasher Sculpture Center will focus on the great sculptural series of Matisse’s career, such as the Madeleines, the Backs, and the Jeanettes, as well as important related paintings and drawings, and influential works by artists from Cézanne to Picasso. Drawn from public and private collections around the world, the exhibition will highlight and put into broader context the important collection of Matisse sculpture formed by Raymond and Patsy Nasher.

After its inauguration in Dallas, Matisse: Painter as Sculptor will travel to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Baltimore Museum of Art.  The exhibition will be accompanied by a lavishly illustrated exhibition catalogue, co-produced with Yale University Press, encompassing new research and offering significant insights into Matisse’s sculptural work.

The Cowtown Cattlepen Maze

The Cowtown Cattlepen Maze is a unique form of entertainment for the entire family, group, or class field trip!  With over 5,400 square feet of frequently changed wooden pathways, resembling the cattlepens of the old west, the maze is always a challenge!  Maze runners can compete against the clock and each other, attempting to locate check points throughout the maze in a given time, to qualify for Amaze’n Prizes.

Our large, second-story observation deck provides the opportunity to preview the maze prior to entering.  The non-maze runner will enjoy observing and filming family and friends making their way through the labyrinth!  The elevated deck also provides a choice vista of the entire Stockyards area, including the Tarantula Train, and is a “prime beef” location to view the daily Fort Worth Herd Longhorn Cattle Drives.

Cirque du Soleil’s Corteo Feb 9-Mar 11

Cirque du Soleil will perform in a blue-and-yellow circus tent in Fair Park for nearly month. This show is based on the idea of a festive parade imagined by a clown planning his own funeral, which he sees as both tragic and magical. Therefore the show, which uses acrobats, actors, musicians and more, plays on the concept of juxtaposition of size, the character of the clown and humanity itself.

Immersion schools turn kids bilingual

Diving in
The immersion method can be intimidating for parents. Some say it’s strange to hear a child reading in Spanish before English. Helping with homework can be difficult when instructions are in Spanish.

Supporters say the payoffs outweigh the inconveniences. Students are bilingual, perform well in English, become independent learners, and have the advantage of a second language when they reach adulthood and look for jobs….More

In Demand: Four Majors Employers Love

Do you feel like the bulk of your job search rests solely on your shoulders? Fear not–employers are looking for you, too. Job hunters can expect to see more employment opportunities in the spring of 2007, as employers begin aggressively hiring in anticipation of pending retirements, a recent recruiting-trends survey of 864 companies by Michigan State University (MSU) shows.

With companies reporting a need for more professionally trained graduates, certain career fields, such as business and engineering, will be hiring more so than others, the report reveals. As a result, specific academic majors will be in high demand.

Get a jump on your career-hunting homework with a sneak peek at four hot fields–business, engineering, nursing, and computer science–with advice from experts on what you’ll need to ace your job search…More

How to Get Better Grades

Grades aren’t everything, but if you or your parents are worried about your report cards, try some of these simple tips.

  • Create a study plan. Figure out how much time you need to spend on each subject every week, and then make a weekly schedule. Find out from your teachers when major projects are due, and put them on a calendar. Once you determine how much time you’ll need for these projects, you can use your calendar to figure out when you need to start working on them.
  • Do your homework. Most teachers base grades on homework, and it’s easier to keep up with your assignments than it is to dig yourself out of a hole.
  • Talk to your teachers. Your teachers may have suggestions about what you can do to learn more and improve in weak areas. But you have to ask!…More

Schools seek more female engineering majors

ATLANTA, Georgia (AP) — Georgia Tech freshman Val Uyemura caught a glimpse of her future even before she started classes in electrical engineering.

“When I went to orientation, they split us up by major and I was the only woman,” Uyemura said.

Uyemura, 18, whose parents have engineering degrees, is one of 87 women out of 7,203 engineering majors enrolled at the school. Nationally, women make up only about one-fifth of students in engineering programs.

Experts argue that if the United States is to remain competitive with other countries in the engineering field, it will have to find better ways to encourage women to join the profession.

“One of the reasons has to do with the negative stereotype in engineering — the nerd drinking Cokes and eating Twinkies until 3 in the morning,” said William Wulf, president of the National Academy of Engineering. “The really important attribute of an engineer is creativity. Somehow that’s not what high school girls are hearing about.”

The U.S. lags behind countries such as China and India in producing engineers and scientists out of college each year, and women and minorities are key to improving that standing, Wolf said. They bring the diverse perspectives needed for the innovation that can set the U.S. apart, he said…More

Secrets of Successful Room Parents: Our Readers’ Best Strategies & Tips for Classroom Volunteers

by Leslie Garisto Pfaff
When I look back on my daughter’s elementary school career, the year I remember most fondly is second grade. It isn’t that Lily learned so much that year (though, in fact, she did) or that her teacher was so extraordinary (though, come to think of it, she was) — it’s that I volunteered to be the classroom parent and got to do all kinds of wonderful things: bump along with Lily and her classmates on a hayride, introduce them to the Sugar Plum Fairy at the Nutcracker Ballet, capture 10 months of memories with my camera. At term’s end, when I handed each beaming student a framed photo of one of the year’s happy moments, I felt like the proud parent of 22 terrific kids — and in a small way, I was.

Being a classroom parent virtually guarantees such rewarding benefits. You get to see young minds grow. You come to know your child in a new way. And you get the chance to help one of the few people who work harder than you do — your child’s teacher. But the job comes with challenges as well, such as recruiting volunteers and finding great party ideas. To help, we went to the best source we know: FamilyFun readers. Here they share their most successful ideas. We think you’ll find they really make the grade….more

LANGUAGE IMMERSION A BIG DRAW

Escuela Bilingue Internacional in Rockridge finds demand for its services greatly exceeds expectations

By Quynh Tran
STAFF WRITER

When Escuela Bilingue Internacional announced its opening as the Bay Area’s only Spanish-language immersion school a year ago, the goal was to have enough students to fill one classroom.

The school opened in September in Rockridge with more than 80 students.

After one semester, the high demand and interest in the Spanish language international curriculum are already forcing school board members to talk about an expansion.

“The demand has blown us away,” said Liza Sanchez, board chairwoman and founder of the school. “It shows how scarce these programs are.”

Although 40 percent of Californians speak a language other than English at home and more than 25 percent speak Spanish, according the U.S. Census, Bay Area schools only offered limited Spanish-language programs or typically introduced the language at the middle-grade levels.

A comparable comprehensive school like the French-language Ecole Bilingue de Berkeley or French American International School in San Francisco or Mandarin- and Japanese-language Pacific Rim International School in Emeryville did not exist for Spanish speakers.

Sanchez organized a small group of parents in 2004 who grew tired of the waiting lists that could reach four years long to enroll their children in small Spanish programs such as Berkeley’s Centro Vida Children’s Center. She grew up in Berkeley and learned Spanish in college but wanted an immersion program for her youngest three daughters…more

Raising Multilingual Children: The First 5 Steps To Success

Submitted by: Christina Bosemark

“….1. Family agreement: Even though agreement within the family is perhaps the most essential ingredient, I am sometimes asked, “What do I do if my partner doesn’t want me speaking to our child in a language he doesn’t understand?” An insecure spouse may fear being excluded from ‘the secret language’ between the other parent and the child. Discuss and compromise. It is very important that couples find some solution that is acceptable to both parents as well as beneficial to the child.

2. Enthusiastic, yet realistic: Once the idea of two languages has settled in, many people consider adding more. Usually the number of languages spoken within the household is enough for the child to absorb, but it’s actually possible to successfully introduce as many as four languages simultaneously — provided you can offer enough exposure and need for each one. Still, research suggests that a child needs to be exposed to a language 30% of his waking time to actively speak it, and since waking time is a finite quantity, so, too, is language acquisition.

3. The practical plan: Next, you need to make sure you have a plan. Agree on who speaks what language to whom and then stick to it. There are endless variations on the two most successful language systems. The most common involves one person who always speaks to the child in the ‘foreign’ language. Anyone who is spending a significant amount of time with the child can function as this primary speaker. The second common language system is where the whole family speaks in the foreign language. To add another language beyond those already spoken within the family, or if your family doesn’t speak any foreign languages, you’ll need to provide an outside source like an immersion program, a nanny or an au pair.

4. Get together: Building a support network is probably the most underestimated success factor, so find others who are raising their children to speak your language. You’ll benefit from their knowledge and be able to share both your doubts and your triumphs. It also ensures future play dates that will provide your child with the ultimate language teachers — other kids. Books, music, movies, and toys in your minority language are the most obvious ways to boost your child’s exposure, but there is also an amazing range of other household items such as place mats, tableware, posters, etc.

5 Be patient: Raising multilingual children requires patience, and there are going to be times when doubt sneaks in. As with most aspects of parenting, it’s a long-term commitment and there will be ups and downs. But remember, that’s happening to the parents of the monolingual children too! Don’t worry if your child doesn’t speak his multiple languages as quickly or as adeptly as his peers. Instead focus upon his successes and marvel at the development of his little brain. Always praise, praise, and then praise some more! Know that when your child says, “I want a hug” in your language, you’ll almost cry with pride. At that moment, it won’t matter that it took some extra effort or that you had to wait a bit for the result….more

Can Parent Groups Do Too Much?

by Sharron Kahn Luttrell

Lauri Lewis thought she knew what to expect when she joined the PTO four years ago. She would help run bake sales, school fairs, and teacher appreciation days, right? Well, yes. But she would also raise money for hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of equipment and capital projects. That got her wondering—what is the PTO’s role, anyway? To enrich her kids’ educational experience, or to enrich her kids’ school?

Increasingly, parent-teacher organizations are funding items that schools say they need but can’t afford. Across the country, PTOs are picking up the tab for computers, library books, even instructor salaries and classroom aides. While most agree these items should be paid for with public funds, many PTOers say they’re not going to hold their breath waiting for those funds to appear…more
